I would like to give my full support to the Live Export Trade.
We are a Trust but also run our own cattle and contracting business.
Currently we employ between 10 / 15 people and support many business’s in Katherine such as Newtons , R&M Motor Cycles, Landmark, Elders ,Katherine Toyota, Car Parts, Rod and Rifle ,Betta, AFD,TTF, Woolworths, RTA/Hamptons, Hardt Transport, AirBorn Solutions just to name a few. These people are also suffering due to the government decision.
Our contracting business has had work cancelled due to the ban; our cattle have gone beyond the weight limits resulting in a loss of income. We still have debts to pay a house to pay for and children to feed. Our staff will be put off when our work stops so they too will feel hardship.
We do not condone cruelty in any form.
We believe that the way it was handled was a knee jerk reaction pandering to the minority parties and independents who are the only people to keep the Government in power, we the Australian public did not vote them in.
There are accredited slaughter facilities over in Indonesia which could have kept the trade open even though the cattle numbers would have been significantly lower. At least the trade would have been open, Indonesia would have not been internationally shamed and had time to get more facilities up to our standards, not one word of all the good exporters, feedlotters, and slaughterhouses has been made.
The government closed the trade and people need to be compensated for their loss of income due to the decision made.
It is my belief that working with industry bodies and the two countries we can resolve this issue.
We cannot process beef here and send it over, thus creating jobs for Austrailans, as they cannot afford to pay for it and they have no fridges to keep it fresh. I would like it noted that meatworks in Australia are bringing in workers from other countries to make up their staff so how is it going to create more jobs if we cannot get the people here to work as it is. We the Australian people give Indonesia 500million a year why not use some of it to upgrade, educate and improve the slaughter of the animals.
There are acts of cruelty daily in Australia to dog’s cats and most other animals but do we ban the people from owning these animals. No. We police it, educate it .
